Identity and Worth

Finding Me in Jesus

One of my favorite quotes is:

“Insecure pride comes from trying to form my identity and calling in myself and by myself. Humble confidence comes from forming my identity and calling outside of myself in Christ ” – Joel Mayward

I love this so much because this was me up till the age if 17 and sometimes I still catch myself slipping and have to remind myself I’m not in control anymore. Losing myself in myself because I wanted to be able to find out who I was through me. I guess everyone does this at some point in life, right? I mean this what people talk about all the time when they say that they are finding themselves. How many of us have heard it said that college is the place to find out who you are. And how many us have seen in movies or heard our very own friends say that they are going on a trip to find out what they want before they enter the real world. But that’s not what we need, we don’t need to form our identity through the world for the world because Christ gave us a calling to use in the world for Him. Trying to find ourselves is something that is impossible because we will never really know who we are, we are always thinking, changing our minds, and never satisfied with what we are doing. But finding ourselves in Christ is different because we don’t have to worry about us pleasing someone who is never be satisfied but with pleasing someone who loves and rewards us for what we do and always encourages us to do more because He already knows everything. Someone who we find joy in pleasing because He shows His love for us when we do something that He wants us to do,something that turns us closer to Him.

Self searching can only lead to dead ends,no matter how much we want to do things on our own. We are always, whether we want to or not, looking for perfection,so we will never be satisfied with what we do. So many of us are depressed or have body issues, social issues, and many other things that make us insecure about our lives because we are trying to find in ourselves in a person who is better than who we are. The problem with that is we don’t really know what the better version of ourselves is. Because we are humans the only things we know is the past and the present moment in the second we are living in it. To know a better version of us is something that we would either have to know the future or an alternate universe, and since we don’t that makes us frustrated which leads to things like depression because we are not seeing in us what we think that we want. We feel we are never reaching any thing, as if we are not good enough to be the person we are. We can not find someway to become the person we want to be no matter what we try because we don’t know the future and what roads to take.

But finding ourselves in Christ is different because He knows it all past, present, and future,He is omniscient. God knows everything that will happen to us depending on route we take, so He will lead us through the road that will take to be the person we need to be.

“He reveals deep and hidden things; he knows what lies in darkness, and light dwells with him.”(Daniel 2:22 NIV).

Finding ourselves is Christ is the most rewarding thing we could ever do. The joy we will receive from knowing that someone loves us so much that He on top of giving His life for us (which is the greatest gift) He always forgives us when we ask Him with an open and sincere heart, is always showing us a way to lead us down the path of righteousness.

  • Setting Us Free

When finding ourselves in Christ everything that ties us down, that make us upset, and any insecurity that we have because of our sins He sets us free from. Truly giving control to Him is having Him take all the things that’s weighed us down and stopped us from getting to where we need to be in Him. It is not looking back because we remember that He saved us and try everyday to be better people in Him

“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.” (Galatians 5:1 NIV)

  • Β Showing Us the Way

Christ knows everything, and He will always show us the steps we need to take. We won’t need to guess or decided whether something is the right thing to do because everything that The Lord says is right. Everything He tells us to do will always lead to a good life.

“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.” (Psalm 32:8 NIV)

  • Always Forgiving

As humans we make mistakes always. But one of the beautiful things in God is His grace and mercy which allowed us to be redeemed through His relentless love for us. Because of this every time we make mistakes we are forgiven when we truly ask for it. He will never hold it against us the mistakes we have made. So when walking with Him He will forgive us and let us return to Him when we get off road.

“All of us have sinned and fallen short of God’s glory. But God treats us much better than we deserve, and because of Christ Jesus, he freely accepts us and sets us free from our sins.” (Romans 3:23, 24 CEVUS06)

  • Fulfills Us

When finding ourselves in Christ He fulfills our needs. When we are trying to find ourselves by our own means we are trying to work to be a better person for ourselves, however we will never be satisfied with what we do. Whether we think so or not we as humans we want to please, we like when people treat us well when we do something right. When we are finding ourselves in Christ we are not doing things for ourselves we are doing them for God. So we are doing things to please Him. Which makes us feel good about ourselves because we are serving a God who expresses His love for us when we do things that are right in his eyes, when we are following His path. He gives us a confidence that we don’t have to express it or show off because people will see it in us. When we are working to please God trying to show that we are happy or doing something with our lives isn’t needed because we won’t feel the to because we are not working to please ourselves anymore so having others comment on our lives to boost us up is not important to us anymore. Christ will start to work with us and through us and make us feel great to be people that He can use. And while working toward the Kingdom of Christ He will start to show us who He made us to be and we will find our identity and calling for Him. And then we would truly have a happiness, in Him.

“And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:19 ESV)”

As Christians we will need to learn to let go of our pride of wanting to do things on our own because it will make us feel insecure and worthless. Because we can search and search the whole world but if we don’t have Christ in our lives we will find nothing. We need to start to let go and humble ourselves at the feet of The Lord and walk where He walks and where He wants to walk, and we will have a confidence we will never feel the need to show off because we will be happy with who we are in Christ.
